The play, written in 1931, contrasts a group of farmers struggling through the early days of the Depression with their wealthy counterparts—a magnate and his debutante daughter—in a large city. The rural people are increasingly drawn toward the promise of Communism to see them through the crisis; however, even the pre-House UnAmerican Activities Committee days, this was a perilous option. For the artwork, I chose names and epithets that were used to denigrate the political opponents and set them in fonts that were popular in the 1920s and '30s to indicate the time period. To emphasize the primary theme of the play, I set one word in white for emphasis.
